Purpose
Observe the sternum from the lateral view.
Prior confirmation
Remove any obstacles (necklaces, buttons, etc.).
Positioning
Seated position (or supine position with the X-ray directed horizontally).
While keeping the midsagittal plane parallel to the cassette, bring the side of the body in contact with the cassette.
Cross the hands behind the back and move the shoulders backward.
Align the center of the sternum body (inferior border of the scapula) with the center of the cassette.
CR, distance, field size
CR : Direct the central ray perpendicular to the back side of the center of the sternum body, 3cm away.
Distance : 100-200cm.
Field size : Narrow down the field to include the sternum in order to minimize the impact of scattered radiation.

The irradiation field is focused and narrowed down to include the range from the sternal body to the xiphoid process.
The sternum is completely visible from the lateral aspect, with the anterior and posterior borders observable.
The space between the sternal body and the manubrium is discernible.
There is no blurring present.
The sternum has a clear contrast and adequate visibility.
